Middle Years Programme

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme at AusIS comprises of Year 6-10 to provide students an education to succeed in the 21st century.

Our students:

  • Learn through inquiry
  • Grow understanding and appreciation of different cultures by learning different languages
  • Delve into issues of our highly interconnected world using 6 global contexts
  • Develop conceptual understanding by engaging with complex ideas embedded in real life situations to transfer to new contexts
  • Learn how to learn by developing Approaches to Learning Skills
  • Apply their knowledge and skills to take meaningful action to provide service to the community
  • Reflect on their actions as global citizens

MYP is inclusive in nature to promote participation of all students with different interests and academic abilities. Importantly, the MYP also builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired through our Primary Years Programme; and it prepares students for the academic challenges of our Diploma and WACE Programme.

Some Questions You May Have

Students arrive at school at 7:50 am, assembly takes place twice a week at 8:00 am and classes begin at 8:10 am and finish at 3:00 pm. There are 7 periods of 50 minutes with recess and lunch breaks. After school sports practice for tournaments and once a week club activities take place. The schedule is adjusted for winter and Ramadan.

Classes online start at 9:00 am having 6 periods of 40 mins with 10 mins break in between classes and a lunch break. Classes finish at 2:00 pm. Zoom and google classroom are used as learning platforms. We are also processing the use of managebac for MYP.

Our MYP classes typically have up to 25 students in them. We believe this small class size optimises the teaching and learning experience, and encourages students to speak more confidently and freely, and collaborate more.

Western Australian curriculum is followed along with IB-MYP framework for teaching, learning and assessment practices.

As part of the MYP, our teachers deliver the curriculum through six global contexts. These help students approach subjects holistically and encourage them to see the links and crossover between different subjects.

Global contexts

• Identities and relationships

Teachers teach the following skills both implicitly and explicitly, give opportunities to practice the skills, assess as well as report on the following skills:

• Communication
• Social
• Self-management: organization, affective, reflection

• Thinking: critical, creative and transfer

Our Middle Years students study English and Bangla Language and Literature. However, for students who need support to access the literature course are provided language acquisition course for Bangla and EAL course for English. Students also study French Language Acquisition. We also make a big effort to celebrate the cultures and mother tongue languages of all our students. This provides an opportunity to learn from each other and fosters an appreciation of people’s different backgrounds.

Indoor Games
• Table Tennis
• Martial Arts
• Chess
• Ludo

Outdoor Games

Others

• Aesthetic movement

Students have ongoing formative assessments during the term and summative assessments at the end of each term. At the end of the semester, students’ performance on each of the eight subject areas along with their skills, behaviour and attitude in class are reported in the semester report card. Students’ IB MYP achievement levels range from 7 for excellent/outstanding to 1 for very poor.

Carried out over several months under a supervisor, the Grade 10 Personal Project involves a student investigating a topic that relates to a global issue they’re interested in. In turn, this leads to the production of a significant piece of work that draws on many aspects of the MYP. Some of our past Year 10 students’ Personal Projects are as follows:
Na Bola Kotha: A Youth-run Initiative

The goal was to create a youth run initiative that promotes art and literature through spreading awareness in the form of an illustrated book.

Composing Electronic Music: The Digital Age of Listening
The goal of the project was to present a palatable and interesting way for people to understand modern electronic music as it is a form of expression created by people to exhibit culture and thought.

E- Commerce: The New Outlet of Business
The goal was to explore the history of e-commerce, its influence on business, and the importance of e-commerce in the business world. The aim was to analyze how business through e-commerce will have impact and will evolve through the next 20 years.

Talos: Voice automated Plant Pot
The goal was to foster a better relationship between people (city inhabitants), and the natural world through scientific and technical innovation. The technologically innovative methods are used to integrate the natural world into our cities which would develop more opportunities for interaction between people and the natural world.
