School Handbook
SECONDARY SCHOOL HANDBOOK 2008-09

CODE OF CONDUCT
The school expects all students to respect others regardless of age or position by using appropriate language and behavior at all times. Students are not to engage in actions which are insulting, abusive, harassing, profane or obscene and which disrupt the learning process of other students or which demean or degrade any other person. Students have a responsibility to respect their property and the property of others. The school will act against those involved in theft, possession of stolen property, or vandalism. The school reserves the right to be the sole arbitrator in all matters of student discipline.
MOBILE PHONES
Mobile phones are not to be brought to school. Students may seek permission from the Vice Principal to make urgent phone calls at the front office.
BRINGING ITEMS FROM HOME
It is the student's responsibility to bring on campus only those items required by the curriculum. C.D.s, D.V.D.s, cameras, phones, electronic games, personal sport equipment, magazines etc are not allowed. Students are discouraged from bringing money or expensive watches, fancy stationary or other items which may highlight disparity in socio-economic circumstances.
ORNAMENTS AND JEWELLERY
Girls may wear plain, unobtrusive ear studs and plain black hair clips and hair bands.
MAKE UP
Wearing make up is not suitable for school.
DRUGS
We expect that students will not possess or use tobacco, alcohol or drugs whilst at school or during a school sponsored activity. Evidence of drug use outside the school, reflects badly on our reputation and offenders will be expelled. The school reserves the right to search the bag and desk of a student suspected of possessing drugs, alcohol or tobacco.
HOMEWORK
Homework is part of the assessment process. Students are expected to present complete and neat work on time. Late submissions will lose 10% of the total mark for each day the assignment is late. Homework is set for a reason - to help the child and should be their own work without the assistance of a home tutor. AUSIS discourages home tutoring unless the tutor has been selected by the school and the programme is of short duration working towards a specific outcome designated by the class teacher. Homework will be approximately one and a half hour each day. Students will have a homework timetable and will need to be well organized.
INTERNET USE
Computers offer a diverse resource to students and teachers. Our goal in providing this facility is to promote educational excellence in our school. Students should use computers responsibly. They are to use teacher designated websites only and seek teacher permission before embarking on a web search. Student passwords will identify their use of websites. They may download for assignment purposes, but must identify website sources. Only 20% of an assignment can be a direct quote from internet or library resources. Assignments will be scanned using plagiarism detecting software and contraventions of these guidelines will be discounted against assessment.
