ABOUT DHAKA

Dhaka is a typically modern Third World capital and largest city of Bangladesh. It is located in the geographic center of the country. As the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka has grown into a busy city of about ten million people with an area of about 1353 sq. k.m. It is the centre of industrial commercial, cultural, educational and political activities for Bangladesh.

The city is within the monsoon climate zone, with an annual average temperature of 25 deg C (77 deg F) and monthly means varying between 18 deg C (64 deg F) in January and 29 deg C (84 deg F) in August. Nearly 80% of the annual average rainfall of 1,854 mm (73 in) occurs between May and September.

National Martyrs' Memorial:

 

The memorial is dedicated to the sacred memory of the millions of unknown martyrs of the 1971 War of Liberation.

 

Shahid Minar:

 

The Martyrs Memorial, commemorating the deaths of 4 people in February 21, 1952 at the hands of police protesting against Urdu as the sole national language of Pakistan.

National Assembly:

 

It is popularly known as the Sangsad Bavhan, built in 1963 by world-renowned American architect, Louis Khan.The building often features in books on modern architecture, and is regarded as among Khan's finest works.

 

Ahsan Manzil:

Located on the bank of river Buriganga in Dhaka. It is an example of the nation's rich cultural heritage. It was the home of the Nawab of Dhaka and a silent spectator to many events

 

Lalbagh Fort:

This unfinished fort is touted as Dhaka's premier tourist attraction. Construction of the fort began in 1677 under the auspices of Prince Mohammed Azam, third son of Aurangazeb, who then handed it over to Shaista Khan for completion. The death of Khan's daughter, Pari Bibi(fair lady), was considered such a bad omen that the fort was never completed. However, three architectural monuments within the complex, all in the Bangla-Mughal style of architecture, where finished in 1684 and remain in good condition.

National Museum:

A visit to the national museum is a must. where you can see a mat made from ivory , beautiful and fine embroideries( nakshi Kantha), piece of muslin clothes ,large number of black stone images ,Coins of 2nd an 3rd Century BC and liberation gallery.

Sonargaon:

Sonargaon (means golden city),27 Km away from Dhaka was the capital of Bengal from the 13th to early 17th century during the Chandra and Deva dynasTy.
