A country of great beauty and charm, Bangladesh is yet to reach its full potential as a tourist destination as the transportation infrastructure is evolving. It remains one of the few Asian countries still to be explored by the adventurous. It's a land of enormous rural beauty, green hills, luxuriant tropical rain forests, beautiful cascades of green tea gardens, the world's largest mangrove forest preserved as a World Heritage site, home of the Royal Bengal Tiger and wildlife, abundance of sunshine, world's longest natural sea beach, rich cultural heritage, relics of ancient Buddhist civilizations and colorful tribal lives. Bangladesh creates an unforgettable impression.
Known as the city of Mosques, Muslin and rickshaws, Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. The city is home to over 14 million citizens and has developed fast in recent years. Dhaka is the centre of the country's industrial, commercial, and political activities. Gulshan 1 and 2 are the embassy and international areas of Dhaka. The international airport has frequent flights to major cities around the world with many major and local airlines.
Chittagong is Bangladesh's second city. Although it is an industrial port centre, the city is surrounded by rolling hills and also has some fine beaches, making it a popular place to visit. In response, the Pakistan Army launched Operation Searchlight, which led to the arrests, torture and killing of hundreds of thousands of people, mainly Hindus and Bengali intellectuals. The fall of the city to the Indian Army on December 16th marked the creation of the independent state of Bangladesh. The post-independence period has seen a rapid and massive growth of the city population, attracting migrant workers from rural areas across Bangladesh. A real estate boom has followed the expansion of city limits and the development of new settlements such as Gulshan, Banani and Motijheel.
